A transgender woman, identified as Ellen Nascimento de Lima, was found dead in a mangrove area near the Joana Bezerra Complex, in Recife, on Tuesday morning (18). According to witnesses, she was still alive when she was found in the water and was asking for help.
According to reports, people arriving at the site to work heard moans and noticed the victim's presence in a mangrove area, under the Joana Bezerra viaduct, near the Coque community. The tide was high, which made access difficult.
The victim was pulled from the water with the help of bystanders. Military police officers who were passing by were also called and requested assistance from the Fire Department. However, when the rescue team arrived, Ellen was already lifeless. Resuscitation maneuvers were performed but she did not survive.
The cause of death is initially being treated as drowning. There is still no official information on how Ellen ended up in the water. According to people who knew her, she couldn't swim and frequented the area.
Residents stated that Ellen was known in the community and described as a calm and beloved person. One report also indicates that her brother had been murdered last month inside a residence on Ilha Joana Bezerra.
The case will be investigated by the Civil Police, who will determine the circumstances of the death and whether other people were involved. The official cause of death will still need to be determined by the responsible authorities.
