Gabi died on her birthday after being shot by a military police officer.
Gabriela dos Santos, the 27-year-old [trans] woman who was shot by a military police officer on Avenida Calógeras, died hours later, this Monday (16), in Campo Grande. Today was Gabriela's birthday, according to the victim's brother, roofer Vitor de Paula Rodrigues do Nascimento.
Shaken, the young man recounted that his sister was a drug user. The addiction worsened after the siblings lost their mother.
"She'd been in that situation for about four or five years. She had already been in clinics, at the Clínica da Alma, and had even been to São Paulo. I did everything I could to get her out of that life, but she didn't want to. She spent a lot of time at Cetremi, and the people at Cetremi really liked her."
A friend of the victim told Vitor that Gabriela was working and was going to celebrate her birthday. Vitor says he even took her to live with him in Terenos, but Gabriela couldn't overcome her withdrawal symptoms. The roofer laments the loss and the context of violence his sister found herself in because of her drug addiction.
“She went out to celebrate her birthday, and then this tragedy happens. It’s complicated, I always told her: ‘Let’s get out of this life, sis, let’s get out of this life, because the way you’re going…’. She had a very short fuse, she wasn’t afraid of anyone.”
In his testimony, the military police officer who shot Gabriela said he fired three times at her. However, the victim's brother claims that he heard from the doctor who treated her at the emergency care unit that the victim was shot four times.
ATTMS (Associação das Travestis e Transexuais de Mato Grosso do Sul) released a lengthy statement lamenting Gabriela's death and demanding a full investigation of the case.
