[Editor's Note: The quote below is from a source in Urdu. As such names are not translated identically to those reported by the trans group who submitted the report]
Last night in Bannu, a transgender person — whom we call a hijra — named Muskan (alias "Diwani") was stabbed and brutally murdered by a cruel, savage individual. I am certain that this savage made an improper demand of Muskan; when Muskan refused, he killed her.
The issue here is that only a few people attended Muskan's funeral to lay her to rest. People stayed away simply because she was a hijra who—in their view—engaged in "wrongful acts," so they felt the funeral... ...should not be done.
But I want to ask the people of Bannu a question:
Among the transgender individuals in Bannu, not a single one has ever gone to someone’s hujra (guest house) demanding sex, nor have they ever barged into a wedding uninvited. Instead, it is the people who seek them out to have sex or watch them dance, and then, in return, pay these individuals three or four thousand rupees.
Furthermore, whenever there is a performance by these individuals, thousands of spectators gather to watch them dance.
Yet, when one of them dies, you refuse to attend the funeral, dismissing it by saying, "They are just a hijra; their funeral rites shouldn't be performed."
To hell with this hypocrisy and this two-faced brand of Islam.
